    Portal 2 (2011)

    portal2.jpgWitty and puzzling, Portal 2 is some of Valve’s best work. Following up Portal (2007) is a mighty task as that game is pretty damn good, but Valve delivered. In the game you reprise your role as the Aperture test subject Chell, with the antagonistic sarcastic semi-sentient AI GlaDOS also returning. Introduced in the game is Wheatley, a blue personality core voiced by the wonderful Stephen Merchant who I know for playing Caliban in Logan and also that one episode of Modern Family where they go to Las Vegas. First things first, this game is very pretty. It is insane to think this was built on the same engine as Half Life 2 (2004), which while is a pretty and fantastic game, is kinda uggo at some points. Second, there are brand new mechanics!!! The most standout one is obviously the three gels adding new layers to movement tech and also to how you even think about the puzzles. The other brand new mechanics are light bridges, the like tube things idk what they are called lol, and also launch pads. Now for my favorite part of the game, the lore. Man oh man does this game expand on Aperture Science lore, as throughout later parts of the game you are voiced through test chambers by Aperture Science CEO and billionaire madman Cave Johnson, voiced by J. Jonah Jameson himself J.K. Simmons. His monologues reveal how Aperture Science was kind of absolutely insane and reckless and in his words “throwing science at the wall and seeing what sticks”. His monologues also reveal how he slowly died from the experiments and also that GLaDOS is his mistress’s consciousness non-consesually put into a computer which is all sorts of fucked up and evil. That and also GLaDOS being put into a potato when you accidentally make Wheatley the new overlord makes her a much more sympathetic character. Onto the puzzles, they are smart and complex and really fun to play through. I definitely need to play the co-op mode because I just want to consume more of this game. Overall this game kicks ass and Valve needs to make Portal 3.
